BPA cannot ever be seen as a standalone term

April 10, 2021 04:09AM
Snead has said over and over.....ad nausum..... that they group players in pods and then when it's their turn they take the player within that pod that best fills a need.

Pretty much every GM I've ever heard dismisses any notion of a purity of BPA ideal that means "Best Player on our board regardless of position". Example: You're the Chiefs. You have one of the elite young QBs in the league signed for the rest of his natural life. And on your board the player that you have stacked as the BPA is a QB. Do you take him? No. You might try to trade down, but if you can't you take the next best player that fills a need.

The Rams have positions of need. All teams have positions of need (with need being defined by that team's management). And those positions of "need" exist in a hierarchy of priority. Same way as it works for signing/re-signing FAs. RE: Floyd.

They also look at what is available this year and in the next draft. And then they look at the relative strength or weakness of a position in those 2 draft classes because players that some popular draft sites (and many of the media talking heads) will rate do so relative to the other draft available players at their position THAT YEAR and even the best may not be all that good relative to previous and projected future classes. Or it may be positively loaded so that you can wait a round to choose because there as so many equally good ones.

So the reason we're all flailing around trying to figure out the Rams draft is because 1) We don't know what the Rams' internally generated priority of needs are (we just have our own personal opinions) and 2) We don't know how they view the degree of performance of draftable players/positions relative to their value in this draft class and 3) we just don't know how their board is stacked.

I will say that we have a couple of really good draft guys on this board that pay attention to the overall performance value of availability of players re: position group, and that is hugely helpful for me because I just don't have the ability to evaluate players or position groups like they do.
