I get what your saying, I really do. But “your team” system is always evolving from year to year depending on different factors. The nfl is a copy cat league, what has success is often emulated and integrated in your own system. Mcvay has been big into “stealing” what has worked against him and others. Additions and subtractions will also have an effect on your teams system and philosophy. This can be coaching, as we seen with Staley, or players by way of free agents , trades, or draft. These may not be wholesale changes to system but changes non the less.
Of course Pro Bowl quality at every position is not possible and was no where in my argument. I was just stating that an upgrade in a position that is on the field 95% of all defensive snaps is in order. I have nothing against Reeder or Kiser, as back ups. As a starter Kenny Young is pretty useless, lot of running around little production. Even if I buy your having to pick either pass or run defensive strategy, I don’t, that position group has been rated last in several outlet lists. Unacceptable. Striving for a balanced defense front , middle, and back end should always be the goal or else that weak spot will be exploited by other teams.
Lastly if we are going to rely on Rams drafting history, the have been drafting a year ahead of time for free agent losses the next year. Guess what , in my best Les Snead, Kiser, Reeder , Young and Howard are all free agents next year in some form or fashion. None of those guys should be priority and should be cheap retain at best. That means we should be drafting LB this year and hopefully sooner than later.
