Just speculation: Kromer wanted to promote his son to assistant oline coach. McVay did not want to cause either young Kromer wasn't ready yet or he wanted a different voice in the role of assistant OL coach and not just someone who would parrot Kromer.

If the former, McVay and Kromer's timelines differed on when Zak was going to be ready.

So Kromer said I don't want to stick around if Zak's not gonna be my assistant oline coach. So they "mutually parted ways."

Zak either has nowhere else to go or wanted to stay and work under McVay's timeline.
