I think that HCs are humans, like players and certainly have
limitations to their abilities, like players do.
So, McVay is not completely adaptable in play-calling across
all types of offenses and has certain preferences he ultimately falls back on - besides the single game outlier. Remember back in 2004?, that one reg season game when an opposing defender called Martz
"impatient" when describing the Rams offensive gameplan/attack? Martz took great offense and kinda blew up at the player - an embarrassing over-reaction on Martz's part and insight into his mindset....but dead-on accurate of Martz's vulnerability on gameday. imo
The opposing player was right.
I think McVay is no different...and has a tendency profile that will fall back to itself in time. McVay is like Goff in that he may not be able or willing to develop at a high level many types of offense...like Goff has the things he does really well as a player and is not as multiple as may wish he was. McVay may be the same way...he cannot coach
every type of player into the specific offense that brings out the best in that player.
Who's to blame? I dunno...but ultimately players get traded and HCs get fired
- Like Martz, whom I thought was on of the best OCs and gameday play-caller I've ever witnessed in 40yrs. imo...if they cannot win consistently, I suspect that will happen to McVay in the end also.
