Was listening to MTC yesterday when Martin's release was announced. Both hosts were very surprised to hear this because: A) they believed Martin to be one of Houston's best players; B ) he'll only be 28 by the start of next season; and, C) he's shown durability.
The hosts speculated that the Texans (like most teams) are fretting over the new cap and are attempting to shed salary. They suspected that the team went to Martin (and likely Duke Johnson as well) and asked to restructure his contract in some fashion to which the player likely declined. Thereafter, the team likely tried to trade him. But, given other teams' cap issues, there were no takers as they (other teams) would prefer to wait to see if he was released outright - which is what happened.
But the hosts were puzzled by this move as it appears as though the Texans were trying to "clean house" with them moving on from many of their best players...but not completely ripping the scab off by dealing Watson and getting future picks and cost-controlled players.
But both of the hosts really liked Martin.
