A guy who signs a 1-year, $6M deal will count $6M against the 2021 cap.
Up until last year, I thought 1-year deals counted 100% against that year's cap too. Ironically, we're speaking of the viability of a new contract for Floyd when it was Floyd's contract last year that teaches that's not always the case.
Floyd's contract:
$5M signing bonus.
$5M salary in 2020; $6,666,666 cap hit in 2020
void year in 2021; $3,333,334 cap hit in 2021
void year in 2022
It seems there are creative ways to sign a player to a 1-year contract too.
This leads me to believe that the real question on Floyd is not can they find a way to fit a new contract under the 2021 salary cap but do they feel he's important enough to make part of the long-term foundation?
If they do, there's a number they have that if he's willing to sign for that, he'll be back. This is just a guess but I think that number might be in the $12M range. But if another team offers $15M+, like with Fowler, they'll let him walk.
IMO, it may be unlikely that he's back but I think there is a much greater chance than zero that he is.
