You state: "I have no complaints about them acquiring Stafford. I just don't buy the narrative some do buy into when they justify the trade."
I'm curious as to why you think the Rams made the trade?
If you posted it before, I apologize, but to me it seems patently clear that McVay wasn't happy with the way Goff was seeing the field. As I believe Silver said, "not on the same page".
To give up 2 1sts and a 3rd and the former #1 overall for a QB 6 years older says the Coach believes that the 32 year old is light years better than what he had especially if you look at what we paid for Goff (2 1sts, 2 Seconds, 2 3rds) and what we are giving up presently.
See I don't care why. Because it gets into the possibility of McVay having bad reasons for doing it. Luckily that is all made moot by the fact that they got Stafford.
I think all sorts of people have all sorts of theories as to why Goff was "the problem" and they are all convinced McVay sees it exactly the way they do. I am skeptical about all of that.
Since when does a qb;s processing slow down within 5 years?
I said it very directly. Shanahan could beat McVay twice with nothing at qb, and Greg Olsen could set Carr up to be a player. So why couldn't McVay do that? And I also said this. Stafford was inconsistent in his 5th year too. "5th year" does not mean he is who he always is.
If Goff could not do all the things you say he can't then how did he win the Saints game for the championship?
I think most of the reasons McVay would come up for making that trade are bad ones that indict him as an offensive coach.
BUT since they got Stafford out of it--it makes all that moot. Stafford is a very interesting qb and he skips over a lot of McVay's offensive coaching issues because he's already a very savvy vet. McVay has to do less coaching and doesn't have to be Shanahan or Greg Olsen. Maybe this gives him a breather and allows him to mature into the kind of coach who beats guys with nothing at qb or develops a Carr into a player.
