Despite the Watson hype (nothing going to happen this year), the only other QB that was either elite or on the bubble of elite that got scooped up is Stafford.
Now teams are left with sorting through the bargain bin of leftovers. Newton, Bridgewater, Darnold, Trubisky, Brissett, Dalton, etc. They may not be terribly expensive, but all will be thought of as "bridge" or "transition" QBs as these teams keep trying to find the star QB all teams seek. Which means that most of these QBs will be with whatever team signs them 1 or 2 years. Then..... it's on to yet another QB adventure.
The Rams were smart. They decided Goff wasn't the answer (doesn't matter if you agree or not) and so made the move swiftly and decisively. They got, by far, the best QB on the market. And that's not meant to be "relative". The guy is special in his own right. He will improve the team.
When the Panthers move on from Bridgewater, who are they going to move to? Does Dalton make them better? How about Colt McCoy? So they may go with a rookie QB.....probably the 3rd or 4th chosen. Might they get lucky? Sure.
But this is NOT where a team wants to be. Yet that's what happens should you decide to sit on your hands and refuse to pay the market price for an upper tier QB or try to drive a hard bargain.
The Lions had a royal flush and they knew it. So did the Rams. So, they bowed to it and in retrospect, we can see just how QB starved this league is. Big drop off between the top 4 or 5 and the rest.
Even if the Stafford thing doesn't produce the Superbowl we all hope for, from a strategic viewpoint it was the right move.
Fact is wew do not know any of this and we cannot prove until the season plays out. If you like me you also could not have anticipated Rams move this offseason 2 years ago. Your premis is that everyone you listed is a bridge QB. I think after the first couple weeks last year Cam Newton was not seen as a bridge but now he is back in the recycle bin. I certainly would have preferred him over Stafford If Goff was gone last year and both he and Stafford were available.
For all the no look passes that were highlights or the deep balls why is it Stafford has not won more games? Certainly there are some great QBs that were on bad teams that had more success than Stafford. Stafford is tough? Funny the guys winning are pretty tough too. The guys that winning are pretty talented and stay available and yet fewer discussions are about what they played thru. Cam fit that tough category but attrition is his enemy and the same for Matthew Stafford. He has to survive our OL and the NFL season to hopefully come out on top.
If any of those Bridge QBs you list as not being all that good have success you will have to reason why and that is the most interesting part of the whole scenario. McVay got who he wanted which should be a plus but he cannot prove he was right, Stafford will have to prove that. I don't have to be against Matthew Stafford because I can't impact his performance. I can appreciate amazing throws that don't translate to wins but I will want to see wins in the postseason. Goff had plenty amazing throws on his resume and he had the wins to validate him. This is a reboot for Stafford. Look I don't have to agree with the trade but I don't think we have to spin everything to prove our HC and organization's brilliance since there is a price tag that is real in #1 picks to be paid. Based on our record the current facts reflects that we were not brilliant and more than one piece has kept us competitively and its called complimentary football. Our failures were not all on QB (see GB game) and not all on defense (Defense struggled) and our wins not all on any one persons contribution but all under our HC's leadership and just like the QB discarded McVays resume will be up for further review with his new QB of choice.
You cannot validate McVay by saying he was swinging for the fenses when all he needed to do was get on base and move the team forward. If we do not produce a Super bowl appearance this was a swing and a miss, strikeout. Short of Watson, Rodgers or Dak this was not exactly swinging for the fences. I think we reached and probably let the rumors of Stafford to 9ers drive us into the trade. I doubt Seattle believes Stafford would make them better but they certainly know that Goff has had their number.
I don't know how we will spin this if this does not yield a SB. Let's hope we do not have to but way to early to pat ourselves on the back.

Rap on.
