Earlier in this thread zn and Leoram presented good challenges and asked good questions but in doing so misstated my position (and likely RockRams too). Their respective statements/questions were ‘does Stafford guarantee a better shot of winning a championship game?’ and ‘paying them [a Tier 1 QB] is no guarantee of consistent success.’

They both use the word ‘guarantee’ in a way that actually flips my argument.

I did none of those things in my post. All I did was compliment the debate and ask a question. Below you clarify your position based on my challenge and it was appreciated. The word guarantee is something I never use in sports (in 2005 I won 78% of my sports bets and thought I was smart til I lost big in 2006 and was properly humbled...never wagered again). I try to see other's point of view. In the thread, "Tea Leaves", ZN ended the thread by stating that I couldn't see McVay's "dark side" after I went to great lengths to speculate what that might be. I'm not a contrarian nor do I defend only one side of an argument. I just enjoy depth of analysis which you have clearly presented here.

My position, restated, is that generalization (ie, never pay the second contract on a tier two QB ) doesn't apply to every team because their individual composition matters. While I rate Dak higher than you, I believe your contention has merit because that defense needs a complete overhaul and their OLine has been decimated by injury and turnover. However, the same has happened to the Hawks and Russell's contract has kept them from rebuilding their defense and OLine. And the relevant question here is what either team would be without their QB. The answer is bottom half of the league in both cases.

The Rams not only paid Goff the second contract, they doubled down by increasing their QB investment on Stafford. But they still have the OLine to address and holes in the defense which puts them in the same dilemma as Seattle. Even if Stafford is Tier 1, it's still one hell of a gamble.

I have a follow up question for you. If you don't pay the second contract, what is the alternative? Should Dallas go back to the draft and hope for the best? Should they run it back with Dalton or maybe Bridgewater? If you let Dak leave, what does that do to the locker room? The fans? Can Jerrah sell a rebuild? Russ isn't happy with how the team is being built and coached but his contract mitigates much of what he wants. The argument can be made that what's good for the Cowboys is not very different for the Hawks.
