....it's been a while! I hope all is well with you and yer kin in this crazy time.
First, good post and a thought provoking one.
I think speculating on human performance is a fraught venture in any field and an educated guess. Humans are wildly up & down as no one is perfect in anything....especially, when it comes to football which is a team sport that is rarely dependent on just ONE player. However, the QB position is pretty influential and solid, above avg & consistent play IS necessary for a QB to be successful year to year in the NFL
(see Brady who is not spectacular, but is the most consistent QB I've seen in decades. THAT is his superpower).
So, when a team replaces a position/player with another player all we can ask is,
"Was this an upgrade to the singular position?". If so, then the
hope is that they
will play to their supposed superior ability when inserted into the 11 man mix and be better than the guy before him. A thousand variables affect this projection...but that's all we humans have to work on...rightly or wrongly. McVay most likely DID this to save his job. McVay knows that this is a year to year gig and it's change or die in the NFL every year due to the example of teams setting those worst to first precedents that make owners want a copy of to spike their team's success rate. For the most part, owners have little patience with losing....or
even winning
(see Marty Scottenhiemer firing after 12-4 season. lol).
The way McVay appeared to move on from Goff seemed very personal and impulsive....as McVay has never seemed to do that with a player before in that way.
It felt very personal...at least, from the outside looking in. imo And it's likely we may never know what Goff or McVay's relationship was and how they dealt with each other. So, this is McVay's opinion of upgrading the QB position. Stafford will play up to McVay's hopes or he won't. But McVay DID try and make the team better
in his view...and as fans, all we can do is sit, watch, make judgments & form opinions based on what little evidence we get from articles and perpetually argue our opinions online as HERDers!!
So, what's done is done...and since McVay is the captain of the ship, he gets final say. If he's right...cool.
If he's wrong, he'll be fired and we fans will move onto the next staff and give them the benefit of the doubt for a few years...until we don't!! lol
