So why give huge bucks to merely competent QBs? Time to rethink this whole thing. And I think a team needs to keep churning the college QB mill until they get a real star, but still not sign him until the last second before he becomes a FA. And then be pragmatic about it. Does there seem to be more upside? Has the QB seemed to have peaked? Is he limited in what he does? Is he a good leader? Does he have the personality to be the face of the franchise?
Few HCs have the cajones to move on from a merely good to a potentially better QB..... the old bird in the hand proverb. That's fine if having 9-7'ish seasons are good enough. But not if you want to be a top team.
I like the Snead and McVay approach. Go big or go home.
Every so often you have a competent QB win a SB but it's just not often enough for me to build a team around them if I was in charge.
There's an old proverb: "the enemy of the best is often the good."
It's the good QBs that lead to no man's land of 9-7 seasons over and over. When they're paid the same amount as the top guys, it's a problem. You're not good enough to win, not bad enough to draft in the top 10 and get a real franchise QB, and you don't have a ton of money b/c the guy cost as much as an elite QB.
That's the issue with the bottom of Tier 2 QBs.
