Didn't Wentz sign his extension around the same time as Goff's?
Assuming that a similar amount of years are remaining on his (Wentz's) deal, why isn't Philly being asked to pay a premium to unload him like we had to (i.e. a future guaranteed 1st)?
First, the contracts were structured differently which means that the trading teams - Philly and LA - are absorbing differing amounts. Philly gave a larger signing bonus to Wentz which means that they took a bigger dead money hit. The receiving team is left with the rest of the contract. Since Philly took a bigger dead money hit, Indy is getting a more palatable contract with Wentz. They owe Wentz $25M in 2021 whereas Detroit owes Goff about $28M. The other 4 years on the respective contracts are similar in that Indy gets Wentz for about $3-$4M cheaper each year.
That better value is worth additional compensation.
Secondly, it's already been reported that the league viewed Wentz as the better, more talented QB. Goff is seen as being a McVay creation. Pretty simple. I think we're seeing that reflected in trade value.
Yeah...I figured the 2nd part. And now I have a better understanding of the differences in the contract situations for both players.
