Center, ILB, and Edge, that's what it's about here IMO. These are positions where upgrading them stands to have a lot of impact. And of course those are also the positions with the best chance to be addressed in FA assuming they create the space.
Of the three Edge is the one you generally have to address earlier vice later if you want your best chance to land a difference maker. Also, looking at the different draft sites there are a ton of Edge types that fit our scheme in that 57 range. There is a really good chance OLB is the BPA there at 57. Now what happens if they find a way to retain Floyd? Probably not much of a change. Our contain was terrible when anyone other than Floyd was not out there in 2020.
Center is not an early draft position in fact it's more of a draft and dev position outside of the rare guys who go high. Since we're not drafting high anyway I am sure there will be some really nice options at 57 but will that center option be a better player than the Edge or ILB? That's what will determine things IMO. It does work against Center though that you know you can get them round 3 and 4.
ILB is a lot like Center. The impact guys, the rare guys who can fill downhill in the run without being a liability in the passing game, they go generally in the first couple rounds. Then you get into the JAGs you can find the rest of the way. And you can hit on those guys too but overall as it pertains to 57 this is exactly the same situation as last season and the season before where we wait and hope one of them falls to us but they usually don't.
I am sure some will ask what about receiver. To which I think McVay always wants another receiver and I think he will draft one. But those three above are more important to wins and losses and matching up against the SF and GB of the league.
