First, lets just eliminate the positions they won't draft:
(in no real order)
Possession WR - they are loaded in this spot. I could see a deep threat maybe.
RB - unless one of the top 2 backs somehow falls all this way and is by far and away the bpa, they are good at RB
OG - I just don't see a OG in the 2nd
TE - As long as the top 2 are gone, and they will be, the Rams will bypass TE
QB - not happening
DT - light class and the value won't be there, plus its a strength of the Rams for now
DE - I doubt they are spending their top pick on a 34 DE
K/P - lol, no
That leaves: (in any order)
OC - I guess this might depend on FA. If they resign Blythe or sign a FA OC, this is probably getting pushed off the table, but as of today, its a need.
OT - I could see a OT like Radunz as the Whit heir apparent.
Deep threat WR - again, this is dependent on what the Rams do in FA. But if the Rams want to get explosives, they need an explosive maker.
Edge - this one is obvious. Floyd looks gone, and it leaves the cupboard pretty bare.
ILB - again, its an injury riddled Kiser, an injured and undersized Howard, Reeder and Rozeboom. Not real inspiring IMO.
S - with JJ leaving, the Rams still have nice depth with Rapp, Fuller, Burgess and Scott. They could add another jack knife style S.
CB - With Hill leaving and who knows with Williams, this could be a major need.
FA should clean up alot of this I would think one way or the other. Esp the questions at Edge, WR, OC and CB. I think S, ILB, OT all will be on the short list walking into the draft.
Love the way you laid that out, Dead. Even my feeble brain can follow that process of elimination.
Just a swag on my part, but I’m thinking that Snead goes the FA route at C and at least one Edge. He can’t afford to enter the draft with holes and those are 3 gaping ones as we speak. (Need 2 Edge players currently).
Now, a FA for speed WR is a possibility but I think less than 50-50. I think he’ll lean toward draft for that, assuming he doesn’t feel that one is already on the roster in combo with Stafford’s talents. Don’t laugh, y’all. He might just feel good about such a combo. Remember how the Rams surprised us with the lack of OL picks just last year?
BTW, I do NOT expect any of these hypothetical incoming FA’s to be of the Tier 1 caliber, rather Tier 2 players at reasonable prices. A Sully type at C, for example. So we best forget about these ‘big name’ FA’s we’re already reading about.
If Snead can pull this off predraft then he will sleep well before Day 2 because I think he would be confident about getting the remaining ‘needs’ list filled from the draft and/or final cutdowns as teams are forced to get down to the Covid cap ceiling.
