Great job as usual. Thanks!
Five notes or thoughts.
1) I haven't seen Myers yet but I saw the way Quinn Meinerz moved in the Senior Bowl clips. I feel he'd be perfect for the ZBS. What is it about Meyers that makes you feel he'd be a better zone blocking fit?
2) I agree with your concerns about who would call the defense if JJ leaves. I'm skeptical they go with that much youth at LB and safety. There's gotta be one vet leader in there somewhere. I could see them picking up a vet LB that is cut. Someone like Benardrick Mckinney is perfect. He may be cut depending on Houston's plans. And if he isn't I'd target him in a trade.
3) I have a strong suspicion they prioritize future LT over a LB. I can definitely see Walker Little or James Hudson at 101. But that's just a gut feel...
4) Love Dardon. I'd be very excited about that. I hope they can get him in the 7th.
5) Your last comment on edge is why I think they find a way to keep Floyd. Something like 4 years, $39M, with that 4th year void, and a $12M signing bonus. So it's really a 3 year $39M contract for $13M per year but the 2021 cap hit would be about $5.666M. That's only roughly $2M more than if they let him walk.
1. Myers can move laterally pretty smoothly. He's not gonna pull and lead block or anything like that. He's also a little upright, so he can get leveraged in a power game. So he fits a team like the Rams really well. Meinerz was asked to pull a bunch in college and looked like a runaway, 3 wheeled beer truck. Yes, he usually hit his target, and that target usually went splat, but looked labored, unnatural to me. So yes he can move, but more vertically than horizontally. And his power is insane. So he works more as a power man blocker.
That said, McVay is mixing up his blocking schemes and either works.
2. One guy I liked this season was Eric Wilson from the Vikings. He is a playmaker against the run and pass, but is sitting behind Barr and Kendricks and is a free agent. He can play multiple LBer spots and seems plenty smart to handle the playcalling. But I agree, you'd love to see a veteran presence calling the D in the middle.
Another guy is RFA Chris Board. Plays the middle behind Harrison and Queen. Not sure he would be retained.
3. Probably, but at some point you either hit on a 3rd or 4th round OT, or grab one in the, well 2nd I guess. I think its easier to hit on a starting ILB in the 3rd than a starting LT. But I like both those tackles. Esp Little.
4. Me too, I have my doubts. But its early. I think he is a 6th rounder at best. And we know the Rams will move around. So if they want him, they will get him.
5. I hope they can keep Floyd as well, but my head hurts thinking about the cap, so until I see what the cap is and how the Rams get under it and how far, I'll just assume they cannot afford him. Your deal makes a ton of sense though.
