I know we have needs at Edge and need a deep threat WR, but I’m convinced that OL had better get attention this offseason, and I’m not talking about some band-aid type fix, either.. Or else we’re wasting a lot of O talent in Stafford, Akers, Woods, and Kupp, just to name a few.
Center is a screaming need to quote a Snead phrase. I’ll leave it up to Snead/McVay/Kromer as to whether he’s already on the roster (Corbett), or a quality FA, or a high draft pick (2nd rounder). Don’t know and don’t care. But they need to make that investment somehow, some way. Personally, I lean toward the quality FA route because it’s a sure thing and it’s plug and play THIS year.
I think they need to strongly consider trading Hav and plugging either Boom, Edwards, or Evans over there. They would give up a little in run blocking but gain a lot in pass blocking for a net positive. Hate to sound like a broken record but a side benefit of this move would free up our TE’s more as Stafford targets instead of staying in to help Hav in pass pro. Doesn’t Stafford deserve to have all possible weapons available?
Lastly, it’s not too early to consider bringing in Whit’s eventual replacement. I think they thought they had done so with Boom but Whit just kept on trucking and now Boom is in his final contract year without proving that he’s the rightful heir. It’s not inconceivable that LOT could become our pick at #57 if a player they really like falls. Would fit with Snead’s ‘one year early’ drafting philosophy.
Lots of possible strategies for this offseason OL ‘fix’, but one thing is for sure if we expect a SB run. This OL must be upgraded unless we are prepared to waste a helluva collection of players on D, Stafford, Akers, Woods, and Kupp. And THAT would be a crying shame.
