Yes I agree it was an upgrade.
I think McVay is very focused on winning and that he is immature as a HC and that he is ego driven. I think the SB wounded and loss affected his psyche. All of that is not unusual for a young, accomplished, man. In my line of work I have worked with a few young hotshot managers who thought their poop didn't stink. They had no problem throwing someone under the bus when their projects failed. The guys thrown under the bus were partly responsible for the failure, as was the manager, but the manager had the power to blame the junior member and let him take the big hit.
I think Goff's bad games and perhaps other things that may have went on behind the scenes soured him on Goff. I am not saying McVay was as egotistical and calloused as some of the above-mentioned managers, and that Goff was an innocent scapegoat, but he was the seen by McVay as the root of the failure. There is some truth to that I believe.
I continue to expect good things from McVay as a HC. He's an excellent HC and he has a proven track record. Most any team would be fortunate to have him. Some of McVay's offensive scheme's have been copied by many other teams. McVay's young coaches have been snatched up by hungry NFL teams. That tells me that McVay has been doing some great things.
