I posted a ton of his California Golden Bears highlights before he was drafted in 2016.
I'm on record saying he was far and away the better choice over Carson Wentz.
I broke his film down as an armchair quarterback and was elated we traded up to draft him.
One of my biggest observations was his pocket presence, footwork and mobility in tight spaces. And his arm talent and accuracy at the college ranks.
When he finally took off under the care of Sean McVay, he never showed the mobility and footwork that I had seen in his college days at Cal.
His footwork and clips I had shown during his days at Cal never translated at the professional level. I never could understand why.
He ended up being a stick in the mud QB in the NFL.
I was also an advocate of him getting control of his turnover issues in college thinking he would get that corrected with coaching at the professional level. That was not the case. He was turnover machine in college and it finally carried over to the NFL level after a year and a half playing in the NFL.
He was good on bootlegs, playaction and rollouts but he never looked as mobile as he did when he played for the California Golden Bears.
He showed the same accuracy ability in the NFL but he never looked like he did on film when it came to foot work, pocket presence in tight spaces and overall mobility in the NFL as he showed in college.
This was a big misinterpretation by myself thinking he would carry those skills to the NFL.
He still ended up being a solid NFL talent but not what I projected after spending hours viewing his college film leading up to him being drafted.
Oh well.. I will always be a fan of his and I've since resigned predicting college QB's translating their skill set to the NFL level.
Good luck in Detroit Jared unless you are playing our Stafford led Los Angeles Rams.
