Rams have countered that wide zone this year

December 01, 2020 10:37PM
The counter is interior runs, which the Rams have done and done well. That defensive look (wide) takes defenders from the middle so that's where it's weak. The Rams have run duo, some trap, and the outside zone. They also struggle when their players get beat, which isn't too often as they have a better than average OL.

Last season the struggles on the interior are what kept McVay from adjusting. It wasn't scheme. It was players. This year his three interior OL are playing well and teams can't stack that outside edge any longer because they know they'll get gashed inside.

Whit being out has changed things though. Boom is not a run blocking guy, he struggles to stay on blocks and gets pushed around. But at least he's good enough in pass pro to not get our QB killed. And some teams have dominated our OL, it's not a common thing but Miami, SF, and Tampa all won more than their share IMO.

Bottom line is no OC is a genius when the blocking is blown up. And few QBs can throw well into the teeth of a good defense when they don't have a run game.
