Darious Williams' free-agent status in 2021 makes it easy for Rams to keep him

This Thanksgiving, the Rams have a lot to be thankful for. Jalen Ramsey has been a stud, Brandon Staley has exceeded expectations as head of the defense, Jared Goff has rebounded from a difficult 2019 season and for the most part, the team has stayed relatively healthy.

Darious Williams shouldn’t be overlooked as someone the Rams are thankful to have on defense, though, and his free agency status in 2021 won’t put Los Angeles in a bind next year. Fortunately, he’s only a restricted free agent rather than an unrestricted one. The difference is massive, making it much easier for the Rams to keep him around long-term.

Restricted free agents are often tendered by their current team in the offseason, which can come at three levels: first round, second round or original round. According to Over the Cap, the first-round tender is projected to be $4.87 million, the second-round $3.4 million and the original-round $2.2 million.

That’s dependent on the salary cap, so those figures could be lower if the cap decreases due to the pandemic. But even if those projections stick, Williams will be an affordable player for the Rams in 2021 no matter what.

If they give him a first-round tender, another team can try to sign him, but in the event that the Rams don’t match their offer, Los Angeles will receive a first-round pick from the signing team. That’s not a terrible return for a talented cornerback, but the Rams would still prefer to keep Williams around after his breakout season.

If Williams were an unrestricted free agent, it’d be much more difficult to keep him. The Rams would have to compete with the other 31 teams on the open market, and if he left, they’d get nothing in return besides a possible compensatory pick in 2022. That’s not in play here as long as the Rams tender him at one of the three levels.

The only way Los Angeles will lose Williams is if A) it doesn’t sign him at all, which won’t happen, or cool smiley the team decides not to match an offer from another team. Again, not likely.

So expect to see No. 31 remain in a Rams uniform for at least one more year, giving the Rams one of the best cornerback tandems anywhere in football.
