Maybe McVay didn't want to take a chance on a strip sack or interception.
Goff was just recovering from a dismal performance against Miami. These players are human I'm sure they are aware of what the national media is saying.
Minus the 2 interceptions and the fumble Goff played a pretty good game. In back to back weeks he beat 2 of the all-time greats.
Even with the FG he led the team with a game winning drive, confidence in tact.
Yes, I'm assuming he didn't want to take that chance. I'm saying I wish he had taken that chance. Goff played a very good game, *including* the TOs, and was nails w/his throws on that drive. That would have been a good time for the young coach to send a strong signal to his young QB, to the team (to the national media, to everyone) that he trusts his guy to make something good happen and certainly to avoid bad outcomes. What was the stat someone dropped recently - that Goff has 42 TDs and 1 int in the red zone in his last 30+ games?
The notion that he "can't be trusted" is just absurd and counterfactual, IMO. But I think McVay fed that narrative w/that decision.
