And that is exactly why McVay wanted him. Fangio did to the Rams what McVay wanted his defense to do to other teams. Staley was with with Fangio in Chicago as the OLB coach. Then went with Fangio to Denver to be the OLB coach. McVay has probably learned as much from Staley about defense as Staley has learned from McVay to be a HC.
So, for as much credit as McVay will get when Staley gets hired as a HC, Fangio should get at least 50% of that.
And as far as a HC gig next year? I'm not seeing it quite yet. The NFL loves to recycle coaches, so some old guys will get shots again and again, and the top coordinator in line for a HC job better be Bieniemy. He should have been a HC last year. And Robert Sahel the 9ers DC easily could have been a HC this year.
Jason Garrett, Todd Bowles, Bieniemy, Sahel, Byron Leftwich, Josh McDainiels, Leslie Frasier, Jim Schwartz. All top candidates for next year IMO.
