Since Sunday I have gone back and watched every Rams game on game rewind. I have come to the conclusion that this team is indeed a Super Bowl caliber team. The Rams oline receivers, and running game are outstanding. The Rams defensive backfield is one of the deepest and best backfields we have seen in quite some time. The merge version of their defensive front has been impressive. The Rams had 6 sacks on Sunday and none from Aaron Donald.
Part of me thinks that even if the Rams finish 10 and 6 and have a wild card birth that I would be fine with that. However, another part of me says no this team is capable of much more than that with this kind of defense and run game and weapons they are a Super Bowl contender. My only concern is the quarterback. McVay’s scheme is just amazing with the way people are just running wide open and Goff has so many easy throws. I mean I watch a ton of football and I’m telling you not everyone offense operates like this.
The reason why I was so upset with games against the 49ers and the Dolphins in particular was because the quarterback in those games clearly was the weak position in my opinion. No it was not a whole bunch of things not working well it was the quarterback not working well within a scheme that was otherwise fine.
That being said I still feel like the Rams can win the Super Bowl with this team but it means that Goff plays a complementary role rather than a leading role. Can he do that? Can McVay do that? We have seen teams with strong defenses and strong run games win Super Bowl championships. Can the Rams do this?
I believe the Rams in this lasts seven games need to be far more balance than they have been in the last four games. Through the Rams first four or five games they were nearly 50% run to pass ratio on offense this is what they need to get back to doing.
Monday night will be a huge game for this defense. Tampa is easily the most balance offense this defense will have faced since Buffalo and Dallas in the first three games of the season. The Rams handled Dallas well and handled Buffalo quite well in the second half of that football game until their final drive. Against Seattle’s one dimensional but very good offense the Rams secondary was masterful. However, on Monday night the Rams defense will be challenged even further given the fact that Tampa can run the ball so well in addition to stretching the field with their outside receivers. I also believe that Tampa will attack the middle of this Rams defense with their RBs and TEs which clearly is the Rams defensive weak spot. So this will be a big challenge and will tell us a ton about where this defense is going.
What say you guys? Where do you think this team is right now? How good do you think they can be? Give me your thoughts. I tell you what, if the Rams can get better and more consistent in their pass game look out because with as good as they are right now every place else this team would clearly be the best team in the conference.
Let me know what you think. And please don’t give the Goff bashing stuff. This is my opinion. If you see different strengths or weaknesses talk about those. Don’t attack me for my viewpoint.
My gut tells me the Rams should be 7-1. They should not have lost to either SF or Miami. A loss to Buffalo on the road and coming back the way they did I can accept.
Go Rams!
Welcome to the club!
I've felt they were a SB caliber team since early in the season when I saw the OL was better than expected and the running game and defense were all top notch.
We're about as balanced as any team in the league and they all have weaknesses so I don't see why it shouldn't be us.
Tampa Bay will be a challenge this week; maybe the biggest to date. But I think our D is perfectly suited to attack their weaknesses. You mentioned them attacking the middle of our defense. I suspect we'll be prepared for that. We'll probably play a lot of 6 DB looks.
All of their losses have come against teams that can get pressure while only rushing 4 players. I watched the Bears and both Saints games last night and they had Brady under pressure while keeping 6 in coverage. Well guess who the 2nd best team is in the league in getting pressure while rushing 4? That would be us thanks to AD.
I see the team much the same as you but I have faith that the passing game will continue to improve.
