McVay was a story the moment the Rams hired him because of his age, and his wow factor.
When he immediately turned a moribund Fisher team into a top contender, he was proclaimed a genius, and rightly so!
And not just a chalkboard genius, but a real paragon in the way that he handles players and garners their respect.
That also included an incredible turn for the positive in Goff's 2017 performance vs 2016. So I think it was somewhat natural to ask, "how much of this is just McVay?" At least for Goff (let's call them) doubters. It was natural for a little while...
2018, even better, except that the whole helmet comm thing got blown up by ppl like Chris Simms, and then the end of the season was not as good as the beginning for Goff.
But now, with Goff in his 5th year, I think it's time for them to stop trying to steal credit from Jared when he plays well.
I just don't remember any discussions like "is Fouts merely a puppet of Don Coryell?", or for any other decent pocket QB.
In the past, analysts have been able to praise good QB's AND their coaches without this credit sorting exercise constantly brought in.
It's being promulgated by commentators who are reluctant to walk back their too early denouncement of Goff.
Yes they'll say some nice things like Simms occasionally does but I just see CYA there. He's waiting to be right eventually.
Ramily!
