Said hello to Isaac Bruce and Tony Banks at camp one time but my most memorable interaction was with a player who was almost a Ram.
One summer during college, I took a summer job for a company selling educational books for school districts in eastern Pennsylvania. I was talking with a person one day who told me Matt Millen lived down the road. I knew of Matt Millen's reputation as a tough guy but I also knew he was a free agent and was talking to the Rams and 49ers. Matt was from Pennsylvania and I had heard several stories from people about how Matt and his brother would take on groups of guys in fights, etc.
So needless to say, I was a bit apprehensive about going to his house but I built up the courage and started walking. I thought I was walking towards his front door but then realized there was no door on that side of the house. I started to get really nervous as I went around his house. I was thinking that Matt would see me sneaking around his house, think I was trespassing and then kick my arse! Then I saw him. He was riding a tractor in overalls and no shirt. The guy was ripped and that only added to my fear level. I finally found the door (no way was I going to run up to that tractor) and knocked. His beautiful wife answered the door and I told her what I was doing in the area. She invited me in and she had me sit at the table with all of her young kids. At that same time, a scenario went through my head of Mr. Millen walking in, seeing me, a young 22 year old college guy, talking to his wife, getting mad and punching me out. Just then Matt walks in, sees me immediately and says,"Hi".
He wasn't the psycho I saw playing on Sundays but instead an extremely nice guy who sat and talked with me as his wife gave us some ice cream. I did what any Ram fan would do. I tried to persuade him what a great idea it would be for him to sign with the Rams (it was the summer of 1989 so can you imagine having him on our defense during that season). I explained how the Rams had a very good team with Greg Bell, Jim Everett and others. I remember him yelling out "The Blade" when I said Jim's name and him laughing (not in a demeaning way). Needless to say he ended up signing with the 49ers (ugh!!) who won the Superbowl after beating us in the NFC championship game.
I tried
