The TE is a weak link. And, there will be a coordinator who will expose it.
This is an offseason discussion but since you all brought it up, if we are a WR offense, maybe, just maybe, we shouldn't be spending a 2nd round pick on a developmental TE.
When McVay came, I bet there were 100 posts on how McVay loves to use the TE. Everett was Jordan Reed.
And now that I think of it, we knew we were changing to the 3-4. We knew that Quinn would not likely be with us after 2017...yet we neglected the opportunity to take an edge guy with that pick...someone we desperately need on defense. Instead, we got a guy who looks to catch 19 passes.
So...looking at it that way, the TE position is hurting us because they wasted a pick instead of taking the opportunity to pick a position where we needed players to adapt to our new scheme.
I just find the reaction a bit humorous to factual stats posted about the TE. No criticism or commentary...just facts. Actually, I knew what the reaction would be.
And like the Cooks vs. Watkins post, I'll give updates...not weekly though...that's too much work.
If Everett gets 4 TDs this year, I'll do a total retraction for the fun of it.
Good point on the need for spending a 2nd round pick for a position that's not utilized much. However, we are looking at this with the benefit of hind sight in terms of strategy.
McVay adapts. That likely was his original plan but things can change.
When you realize Higbee isn't the TE he needs for the Reed role, Everett gets injured, and the WR is the strongest in the league, McVay is smart to change the strategy.
IMO, they're not being hurt by it until the offense gets stopped. Lets have this conversation again, if and when, some DC out there exposes them as you think will happen.
With Goff, Gurley, the WRs, and the OL playing the way they are, I am skeptical that there is a D out there that can stop this offense.
Agree completely dz. We're averaging over 30 points a game with those TE numbers. I don't see a problem. There's only so many balls to go around. If more targets were going to the TE, who would NOT get those targets; Kupp? Woods? Cooks? Gurley?? I wouldn't want to limit opportunities to those guys just to get a POSITION more involved.
