Highly doubt they simply let AD walk....
Yeah doubtful he would just walk but in a way that's semantics....dz is just saying this Rams front office has tended not to come through on top contracts so far. They let Jenkins walk because they lowballed him, he took another offer (the difference was 25% more). and they only had one tag which they used on Tru. But if they don't sign AD and try to tag him, he can simply stay out and demand a trade. People had a hard time coming up with examples of top players who demanded to be traded who DIDN'T get traded. It's hard for teams to get nothing for a guy while he sits out. Especially since in the Rams case, if they tag him, he still counts against the cap even if he doesn't take the money.
....
That's a bit of a mislead....the Rams simply chose Tru over Jenks that offseason....they knew they couldn't compete in the open market for Jenkins and keep Tru at the same time.
Tru was coming off the better year that offseason, so I can see why they did.
They made JJ an offer, a bad low one btw, he walked.
Most teams that choose one player over the other just let the one they don't want walk. You don't go through the process of making an offer.
If for some reason he had accepted, the Rams would be on the books for 9 M a year. What do they do then, say "we didn't mean it?"
It's one thing to not be able to sign a guy for whatever reason. But that process is nothing like just letting a guy walk. When you let a guy just walk because you don't want him, there is no offer.
