Things you might have missed in the Rams' 14-10 loss to the Dolphins

Here are a few things you might have missed during the Rams’ 14-10 loss to the Miami Dolphins on Sunday at the Coliseum.

FIRST QUARTER

Jared Goff's first regular-season play: a false start. The second, a pass tipped at the line by defensive tackle Ndamukong Suh that was followed by a shove to the ground by defensive end Jason Jones on third down.

Todd Gurley’s 24-yard touchdown run — his longest gain of the season — was made possible by guard Rodger Saffold. He got a quick push on his man on the left side of the line and then sprinted over to corral Dolphins linebacker Donald Butler into a mess of bodies on the right side of the field, opening a hole for Gurley.

SECOND QUARTER

Safety Maurice Alexander's bone-crushing hit on Kenny Stills on a second down was strong enough to stop the Miami receiver in his tracks, prompt an eruption from the crowd, and set off the second of many minor scrums between the teams.

On the next play, Lamarcus Joyner capitalized on that energy, sacking Dolphins quarterback Ryan Tannehill on third down, thanks to a missed blocking assignment by running back Damien Williams. He allowed the cornerback to reach full speed untouched on his way to the quarterback.

Rookie linebacker Josh Forrest was knocked out of the game with a knee injury after a collision with teammate E.J. Gaines as they pursued Tannehill out of bounds. Neither player got to the quarterback.

The Rams were the first team to convert a third down, and they did so with 3:48 left in the second quarter when Goff scrambled to his left and connected with Lance Kendricks for a 20-yard gain on third and 10. The Dolphins had their first conversion with 5:47 left in the fourth quarter.
