I think some of the pieces might be there already. We saw Quick take a nice leap forward last week. This team still lacks someone who can take the top off a defense. The only one with that type of speed is Tavon. He is too small to be a deep threat.....although Keenum launched one deep to him last week. The O-line is simply not strong enough to dictate the line of scrimmage with 8 defenders loaded in the box. So, the key will be Keenum hitting receivers that can run short, crisp routes. From everything we hear about....that is Pharoah Cooper and Nelson Spruce. I think those to guys not getting on the field is killing this offense.
If they get healthy, and you have Quick combined with Spruce split out wide and either Tavon or Cooper in the slot......that might work. IF Quick has figured out how to win the jump ball (provided Keenum can get it to the right spot)......and what we saw from Spruce in the preseason game was REAL....you have to figure Tavon or Cooper will get open.
This team needs to get a break early in the game. They haven't taken an 10+ point lead early in games. If they can get that cushion.....and prove they are STILL willing to throw the ball......things will open up for the running game. We might find this young O-line thrives on running down hill with a 10+ point lead. Then 10 points will quickly become 20 points. Once they get in a position where they can feel their oats....it should build on itself for future weeks.
That's my plan (er.....my hope).
