Rams RB Trey Watts suspended indefinitely for substance abuse

EARTH CITY, Mo. -- Four weeks after returning from a four-game suspension for violating the NFL's policy on substance abuse, St. Louis Rams running back Trey Watts has been suspended indefinitely for breaking the same rule.

Watts' suspension is without pay and effective immediately. He was originally suspended for the first four games of the season on May 29.

Watts returned to the active roster during the team's Week 6 bye

"It's really unfortunate for Trey," Rams coach Jeff Fisher said. "We have a program, and the players have to comply with the program. Trey had an issue that cost him the first four games of the regular season, and then when Trey came back, Trey was good. The setback was something that took place before he was suspended. So it ends up being another positive, and the league requires him to sit. So unfortunately we'll lose him for the remainder of the season."

Watts played nine special-teams snaps in the Rams' Oct. 25 win against Cleveland but was inactive last week against San Francisco.

"Emotionally, psychologically and physically, he's doing good," Fisher said. "He's on the road to recovery, if you will. We're pulling for him, but we will be without his services here for the remainder of the season."

The son of former Oklahoma politician and football player J.C. Watts, Trey Watts made the Rams as an undrafted free agent out of Tulsa in 2014.

Watts was the team's fourth running back, but with him unavailable, the Rams still have Todd Gurley, Tre Mason, Benny Cunningham and Chase Reynolds on the roster at running back.

Another violation of the NFL’s substance abuse policy has resulted in an indefinite suspension for Rams running back Trey Watts, the league announced Wednesday.

Watts was a special teams player and backup who played in 14 games as an undrafted rookie last season. It was announced last March that he’d been suspended four games for violating the league’s substance abuse policy.

The Rams released Watts last month at the end of his suspension, signed him to the practice squad, then promoted him to the active roster 10 days later

Watts is gone. He's a free agent living a life of regret.
