As the worst offense in the NFL, there's some situational offensive schemes, and real time proficiency on early downs to cease the poor set ups on 3rd downs.
This isn't an area that camp viewers can really report on, but it is something I'll be looking for in the few snaps first team gets next Saturday.
I also have to think that Fisher will play his starters for longer than a quarter to give Goff a shot with the 1s.
And, because of the vanilla schemes that are employed so much during the preseason games, chances to excel at first downs sure aren't going to avail themselves......or will they?
As we know, the ability for the backfield to pick up blitzers, and the pass rush is so important to keeping the pocket clean for just a beat more.
I guess if there's one area to key on for me is the ability for the offense to push the ball past the "west coast" check down. Foles nightmare of checkdowns wasted the offense. The checkdowns were set up by poor first down efficiency. No push from the line, dropped passes, and miscues.
again, not a camp viewers check list of things to keep an eyes out for.
And one guy......
Brian QuickI don't think the boy will recapture the magic he showed before the injury. We kept thinking he was going to reemerge; we kept wondering if it what him; was it game planning; Why did they even bother giving him the "show me" contract?
Quick will only get so many live snaps to show his worth. Will they be in practice? Will he make that flash play today, or during the preseason matches?
It's me, it's a real question. He's got tools, but he'd have to flash pretty brightly to find a gig. A dozen guys are in camp trying to steal his job. If that didn't light a fire in his gut? Well, he sure seems an easy cut. Add on that some of the kids are going to be making plays on special teams. I can't remember the last time I saw Quick out there on specials. His time is now; Love to see him get it done, but Snead didn't bring all the youngsters in because it looked good on paper.
All things equal; I wouldn't give any of the new guys a leg up on Quick, and the great thing is......as late round picks, and UDFAs; I'd just let the best man win the roster spot of Quick's.
Finally, red zone.
Red zone snaps are ones that we can get a glimpse of how things are working with the offense. It is our campers that will get a good look throughout practices at who can find a open spot to sit in, who can make that epic catch in the corners, and sidelines. Who really has the hands to snatch that ball out of the air, make a basketball type play in traffic. It involves the entire offense, and for guys like Goff, he'll end up taking snaps from center in a lot of those scenarios. And, btw, who can level the guy in front of him and spring a Cunningham into the endzone from the 3 yard line. Yep; Redzone.
