Not the best RB, that's for sure. Not with Gurley back there.
Not the best WR, either. Those are mediocre numbers, fellas.
Well first, he doesn't have to be better than Gurley to add something. He gets 8.3 a carry.
But that's okay, he's not a running back.
He's not a receiver either. Not a pure receiver anyway. Never will be either, no matter how much he improves at it.
He's a hybrid, multiple weapons guy.
And so good at it they can and do set up some plays by using him as a decoy.
Name another WR/RB multiple weapons type you know of who is as good.
Maybe one or two...total?
...
Exhibit A for Jack of all trades, master of none. Useful when used in gadget plays, I guess.
.
Well we just see this so completely differently. You're entitled to your opinion obviously but mine is way different.
So the way I see it, he IS a master of the trade he has, which is being a multiple weapon/combined yards player. I don't see any "gadgets" in it, it's actually way deeper than that. He's so effective that in fact teams gameplan for him, which is why it works when they use him as a decoy. When was the last time you heard of a mediocre or overrated player being used as a decoy every single game, and it still works every single game?
And put what he does together and it is clear he has an unusual advantage. He can run, or catch, or be a decoy from any position in the formation. That means any defense that sees him in there has to be aware of and prepare for all those possibilities on any given play. That would not work unless defenses respected him. You don't account at the gameplan level for an overrated player.
In terms of him being a master of that role---combined yardage/multiple weapon type---name anyone else who is as good at it. Lockett got mentioned, but Lockett had 20 yards rushing on 5 carries and no TDs. His longest run was 8 yards. Tavon had more than 400 yards rushing on 50-something carries and 4 TDs. He averaged 8.3 a carry.
So when it comes to the multiple weapon type, who else is a master of that role? To the point where you can count on him as a decoy as well as a threat with the ball in his hands. Is it anybody?
And that's all before he improves the receiving part of his game.
