While many fans had been holding out hope that Los Angeles Rams cornerback Trumaine Johnson would be able to strike a new deal with the team, it seems that time may be running out.
According to Bleacher Report’s Jason Cole, the chances of a new deal for Johnson before the July 15 deadline seem unlikely.
This means Johnson will be earning $13.952 million this season under the franchise tag, and should be able to land a nice deal during the 2017 offseason. It’s been widely expected that Johnson and the Rams wouldn’t be able to work out a deal before the deadline, so this isn’t a massive surprise.
The 26-year-old put together by far the best season of his young career in 2015, totaling 71 combined tackles, 17 passes defensed and a ridiculous seven interceptions in 14 games.
While it seems likely that the two sides will look to work out a deal after the coming season, it’ll be interesting to see how that all plays out. For now, let’s do just what Johnson is likely doing, and turn our attention to training camp and the 2016 season.
