7 Rams records that could be broken in 2021

The NFL expanded to a 17-game season this year, making it the longest season in league history. Fans are excited to have more football, but record-holders across the league might need to worry about their marks being broken.

For the Rams, there are a handful of records that could be topped this year during the 17-game slate. Matthew Stafford is a high-volume passer and should air the ball out plenty. Aaron Donald probably has his sights set on a couple of his own records, while Cooper Kupp and Robert Woods could push for a receiving record set by Isaac Bruce.

Here are seven Rams records that could be broken in 2021.

1
Passing yards: 4,830 (Kurt Warner, 2001)

Warner’s record of 4,830 yards is very much in danger this year with Matthew Stafford arriving – and the NFL going to a 17-game season. Twice already Stafford has topped that yardage total, throwing for 5,038 yards in 2011 and 4,967 yards in 2012.

With a 17-game season now, Stafford could easily surpass Warner’s mark. To do so, he would need to average 284.2 yards per game in order to break the record.

Touchdown passes: 41 (Kurt Warner, 1999)

Stafford’s career-high in touchdown passes is 41, which he did in 2011. He hasn’t had more than 32 in any other season, however, so that’s somewhat of an outlier. Depending on how pass-happy Sean McVay gets in the red zone, Stafford could top 41 touchdown passes this season. Averaging 2.5 per game would give him the record.

3
Receptions: 119 (Isaac Bruce, 1995)

Cooper Kupp caught 94 passes in 2019, which is tied for fourth-most in franchise history. He also had 92 receptions in 15 games last year, while Robert Woods has two seasons of exactly 90 catches.

Catching 120 passes in a season is no small feat, and it’ll be especially difficult with the depth and rotation the Rams have at wide receiver. But watch Kupp and Woods this season as they chase Bruce’s record.

4
Sacks: 20.5 (Aaron Donald, 2018)

Donald was borderline unstoppable in 2018, setting the franchise record as well as the single-season sacks record for a defensive tackle. Even in a 17-game season, it’ll be extremely hard for Donald to record 21 sacks or more.

But if there’s ever been a player you shouldn’t doubt, it’s the all-world pass rusher Donald.

5
Tackles for loss: 25 (Aaron Donald, 2018)

Tackles for a loss have only been tracked since 1999, so it’s no surprise that Donald owns five of the top six spots in franchise history. He’s had five seasons with at least 17 tackles for loss, and even though he “only” had 14 in 2020, he could push 25 again this season with the help of Leonard Floyd and Sebastian Joseph-Day up front.

6
Passes defensed: 21 (Dre’ Bly, 2002)

Pass breakups have also only been an official stat since 1999, so the sample size is smaller. But last season, Darious Williams broke up 14 passes in 16 games last season, but that was only playing 81% of the defensive snaps. He should see an uptick in playing time this year with Troy Hill gone, making him the clear-cut No. 2 cornerback.

Jalen Ramsey will be locking down receivers on the other side and likely won’t see many passes come his way. So with the high volume of targets Williams could have, he might be able to push Bly’s record.

7
Field goals made: 39 (Jeff Wilkins, 2003)

The Rams are going to score a bunch of points this season. It’s just a matter of how successful they’ll be in the red zone. If they stall like they did last season, Gay will get a lot of opportunities to kick field goals. Wilkins’ record of 39 will be tough to beat, but if Gay can average a little more than two field goals made per game, he’ll take the top spot in the record books.
