And I'll be stoked if he emerges as an elite threat this year. But the first question is what will that third role be. Which by extension is a question of where will Puka be playing.
My theory on this is that they don't want Puka getting too beat up over the middle. They're gonna use him on inbreaking routes and the slot at times, and all that of course. But if someone can emerge as a chain mover underneath and take the beating, then the chances of Puka being healthy for the title run in the playoffs feels more likely.
So who is the best candidate for that? My answer is Klare. And don't get me wrong. I'd be more than happy to see Ferg emerge this year and become the elite TE we all hoped he'd be. But I think Klare's the guy who best ports into that slot security blanket usage. He is very fluid in and out of his breaks for his size, he has natural feel in traffic, and he's got the hands.
Way I see this going down is that becomes clear as camp proceeds. And it will be reinforced in preseason games. By preseason game 3 that role should get locked down for the most part, and I don't know if it'll be Klare at that juncture. But that will be revisited if necessary until they find someone they're happy with in there.
CJ is also an option because he's got a big and strong frame. But I think Klare's the plug and play fit. Just gonna come down to how long it takes him to be fully natural and fluid in the scheme.
