Currently, we have nothing behind Stafford. Nothing at all. Not one single QB who can be counted on to step in and win a few games if Stafford went down and to me, that is a concern during an All In year.
Enjoy reading everyone's opinion (everyone's got one, kwim), so here is mine. The "we have nothing behind Stafford" reminds me (I've said before) of the Joe Montana / Steve Young saga. Here's a snippet of the current reporting on that:
The main knock on Steve Young backing up Joe Montana is that he is an over-aggressive, turnover-prone scrambler who trys to make too many plays, unlike the calm and precise Montana.
Sounds about the same here and we should pump the brakes. Stetson Bennett has done nothing but perform, grow and get better. I'm getting more and more confident he's showing he can step in, especially now running the 1st team in camp, should need be.
But just my opinion.
Not comparing Bennett to Young, but what we do know in fact is what happened in the Montana / Young situation. Young sat behind Montana for 4 years. Both now in the HOF.
I enjoy reading others opinions as well. Including yours!
Opinions are what make this board fun and I respect yours. Different opinions make for good conversations and sometimes that can lead to enlightenment or make us think of things from a different pov.
I think I recall seeing a post about the Montana/Young point you are making. Maybe it was you. I think I responded to that post and still feel the same way.
I get what you are trying to say and understand you are not trying to compare the Montana/Young situation to ours but I think that's how it comes across and imo it's not a good comparison because Young was sooo much better and more experienced than Bennett going into SF. Young played and started for an actual NFL team after playing and starting for a USFL team too.
I agree that Bennett "improved" and have said many times that he played his best football at the end of the last preseason but that is such a small sample and considering it was only preseason makes me a little more unimpressed than some.
I have also mentioned that I was a huge Bennett fan when we got him. I had high hopes for him and my expectations were much higher than what he achieved. Maybe my expectations were too high because from what I have seen from Bennett leaves me with no confidence at all that he could handle starting in the NFL and a QB2 is just one snap away from doing just that.
Maybe Bennett comes out and plays awesome this preseason and that might make me feel a little better about him being QB2 but I still would have my doubts until I saw him play in a regular season game.
I looking forward to seeing Bennett and Simpson this preseason. It should be a fun battle to watch and I see Bennett as the winner of that battle but having said that, I have doubts that either QB are NFL ready. Especially on a legit SB team.
