Prior to DeBoer's arrival Jalen Milroe had just completed a season where he threw for
23 TDs vs. 6 INTs, while also rushing for 531 yards and had an additional
12 rushing TDs. He was being talked about as a potential 1st round pick entering the 2024 season.
While one may not have liked him, do we really believe that Kalen DeBoer was going to have a legit competition at the QB spot during his first season at Alabama? AND especially when many in the state were against his replacing Saben and wanted a home grown replacement? While it's very well possible that Simpson might not have won, there was no chance in HELL that was going to happen..
And if we want to credit DeBoer for Simpson, should Milroe have regressed under him?
Simpson played in the SEC behind the 110th ranked OLine which helped produce the NCAA's 128th ranked rushing attack @ 3.35 yards per carry and his targets
almost led the nation in dropped passes. Despite this, the team went 11-4 and won a playoff game.
Pennix, on the other hand, played in the PAC 12 with a much better OLine and rushing attack that averaged 4.6 & 5.0 yards per carry. In one season his
4th and 5th string WRs were Germie Bernard & Denzel Boston (2026 top 50 draft selections).
None of this means that Simpson is destined for stardom, but the lack of context amazes me.
