I really see Simpson as a hopeful draft pick at QB. A post Stafford bridge that may pan out with good coaching ala dree Brees or a Purdy.
Remember, that journeyman nobody of a QB - Mac Jones - beat our SB bound Rams last year. Hell, I was thinking of trading a 3rd to 5th rounder for Mac Jones to be Stafford's back-up to save our #13 draft pick this year for another player.
IF...McVay is still here after we win another SB or until Stafford leaves...I still think the Rams trade for a Vet QB to be our next Stafford if Simpson ends up average and a back-up type QB. I think the drafting of Simpson was a hopeful/wishful nod to being responsible for the future and getting a back-up this season when we NEVER pick high. Because if Stafford got injured this year and we had no one behind him...how irresponsible would that look like? It's kinda what our OL depth is gonna be this year...scary with no room for losses. I was hoping for 2 OTs with our 2nd & 3rd rounders instead Klare...tho we got Trost. Our 2nd should be an OT but they rolled the dice on Alaric and that is already showing diminishing returns.
Anyway, QB is the most important position and the Rams are never near the top of the draft so they rolled the dice with Simpson. I still think the kid's a bit too wide-eyed now... but he's got good DNA as Alyo says as a coaches son...but also with the intangibles and qualities that shine in a McVay system. Rarely is a rookie QB ever ready to play in year 1. It's a smart decent gamble of the #13 pick for the most important position on the field since we don't have anyone behind Stafford. btw - If Garopolo doesn't retire and came back to the Rams this year I think the Rams might not pick Simpson
