If you listened to the Rams press conference right after they drafted Simpson, McVay referred to pick #13 as an extra pick. He said they were going to take TE Ferguson with their 1st round pick anyway and ended up getting him in the 2nd round, while picking up #13 in 2026. He and Snead looked at that #13 pick as a bonus pick, so why not see if you can possibly get your future QB with that pick?
I think they looked at the pick as a low risk, potential high reward pick. If he ends up being a bust, they can just say that they used an extra pick on him and they didn`t have to trade up for a QB, and they also got CB Trent McDuffie with their original 1st round pick. Not to mention, If they waited for the 2027 draft for a QB, they wouldn`t have been able to trade for Myles Garrett.
I do think Simpson is in the absolute best spot he can be in to have some success, but who knows how it will turn out. Time will tell.
