So the jury is still out. But if the Rams don't win the Super Bowl this year and it's close... the kind of close a blue-chip player would've afforded... there will be people looking back at this draft and asking why.
The 13th pick in this year's draft wasn't the only option available to the Rams to bring in a possible franchise QB as you and others have pointed out.
And the 13th pick in this year's draft isn't the only option available for bringing in a blue-chipper if the Rams think they need another one to get a SB win this season.
Many have pointed out the risks involved in expecting a rookie QB to develop into a franchise QB and those concerns are certainly valid. But wouldn't there also be risks if the Rams drafted someone else and expected them to be a difference-maker this year?
I Googled "draft concerns Lemon" and got this:
2026 NFL Draft concerns regarding USC receiver Makai Lemon center on "disastrous" pre-draft interviews, small hand size (8 5/8) inches), and questions about his elite upside despite high production.A second Goggle search got this :
Draft concerns regarding USC WR Makai Lemon centered on a "pedestrian" athletic profile, small hands (8 ⅝ inches), and questions about his ability to handle physical press coverage. The Rams could have drafted Lemon (or any one else) and not gotten the help they expected.
But with Simpson in the fold the Rams can get a vet difference maker either as a FA or via trade.
Since McVay joined the Rams in 2017 the Rams have traded for Watkins (Aug, 2017), Fowler (Oct, 2018), Corbett (Oct, 2019), Ramsey (Oct, 2019), Kenny Young (Oct, 2019), Michel (Aug, 2021), Von Miller (Nov, 2021), Dotson (Aug, 2023), McCreary (Oct, 2025).
Drafting Simpson at 13 doesn't close the door on bringing in another blue-chipper: if the Rams think they need one to get over the hump they aren't shy about getting one.
