He is a 5 star recruit who sat the bench too long at Bama. I understand him not beating out Young initially. But not beating out Milroe is a red flag. I think he should have transferred, and would have if he had the competitive drive you want in that position. Now maybe he has the competitive drive, and he is just loyal and good to animals and all that. But it's a flag to me. Then his last year he starts out with a bomb of a game, goes on a tear where he looks like a high pick, then wilts vs better competition. The boy is capable of doing everything McVay wants in his offense. When he has time to throw. When he doesn't... Well, let's just say he's gonna have some more time on the bench now to work on these things and adjust to the speed of the game at this level.
On top of that McVay is the Coach with the highest expectations at QB in this league. He tossed Goff on the garbage pile because he checked down too much, couldn't weather a rush, and lost confidence. And chances are Goff is a far better QB than Simpson will ever be.
So there is no universe where I am going to like this pick. I absolutely detest the decision to draft Simpson. But that doesn't mean I hate Simpson. I think he's a good young man who is going to do the work. He is diligent, God fearing, undoubtedly a top shelf teammate. Etc. Very likeable. But in the end I will be very surprised if he's good enough. And if he is, I will be very happy. Also I will eat crow on that. But there's a long way to go before we will know and I'll be surprised if he's anything but a reach when this draft is viewed in about 5 years.
