What do you think about a CB who runs (according to today's Pro Day) at or below 4.30, has a 43.5" vertical, and totaled 33 PDs and 7 INTs over 3 college seasons?
How about a LB who runs a 4.53, had a 39.5" vertical and 10' 9" broad jump, and amassed 182 tackles, 24 TFL, 10 sacks and 6 INTs over the last two collect seasons?
I give you the fierce, productive, but diminutive D'Angelo Ponds (5'9, 182) of Indiana, and Kyle Louis (6'2, 220) of Pittsburgh.
I think I may be sleeping on these guys.
But where would they play, you ask?
Well, given our refurbishing of the CB room in the trade/FA market, I think we can find a role for Ponds. He would not be a CB1, forced to match up against big WRs (though if you watch his tape against Denzel Boston, it's not as scary a proposition as you may think). We could move him around, let him match up against the smaller, quicker threats (JSN, for example), and let him use his assets, which are pretty significant.
As for Louis, I don't know if he's an NFL ILB or SS, and I'm not sure it matters. He's a playmaker, and has the ability to help with tough match-ups like CMC and Trey McBride, as well as spying running QBs.
With a stacked roster with few holes, maybe size and pure position fit are less important factors. These guys are players, and (as Day 2 options), are worth looking at (and you can expect to see them on my final Rams draft board).
