Generally speaking... Seems like most of his misses have been upside types, where he overvalued projections and possibly undervalued floor. And his run he and McVay have been on with mid to late round types seems to have been thanks to floor being prioritized, where they have a role they fit.
But either way my guess on QB is that they let Garoppolo go in FA. Then they draft a QB midrounds to get the one they like and park him behind Stafford and Bennett. So Bennett's QB2. And then next year QB2 is the pick if all goes to plan, when Bennett hits FA. From there if Stafford hangs 'em up you trade up in the draft to get a QB you want, or do it via FA or the trade market. Or both. Worry about that when you need to.
As to which QBs they target for QB2 in this draft I find that to be very interesting. Simpson doesn't fit that plan, as he requires a higher pick if the media is correct about him being a first rounder. I have him closer to the Nussmeiers and Klubniks of the small QB association in this draft. But he does fit McVay, however I don't think Simpson will be the target because they will want to take the QB2 later. So here's my guess on who they target and why:
If they go for QB2 then I think it'll be Klubnik. My reasoning is that he's a QB who can move the ball underneath with quick processing, but he also has advantages of mobility and pocket feel. His arm is stronger than Nussmeier's arm too, which is key for McVay who demands deep out throws and stretching the field. Disadvantage is he is small. But as a QB2 and potentially a bridge option in 2027 that isn't as big a deal.
If they go for talent and upside to cook behind Stafford then it will probably be Payton. I don't think he's a good fit for QB2 in 2027 but maybe they have a different plan. Payton is good for that approach because he's got all the tools you can see and will have that redshirt at the very least.
