When he got hurt, our pass defense was impacted. Corners couldn't cover for as long, QB's had that extra nanosecond to finds the receiver 'Spoon would have been covering, got ball out quicker.
Our TV screens showed the rush, the throw, and because the ball came out it appeared that the rush didn't get home.
Same thing in the Chicago game. Caleb didn't do so well until 'Spoon went down.
Safety blitz or corner blitz relies on the remaining DB's, or at least the ones covering the #1 and #2 receiver to be able to get it done - when the #1 CB goes down and it's a big dropoff to the #2 guy, and another to #3, blitz is less of an option. All the QB hs to do is hit his hot read, usually his #1 receiver. If that guy isn't well covered the blitz backfires.
I would prefer not to blitz, but in the latter part of the season, our 4 man rush wasn't working. The Safety blitz with Kinchens worked to perfection in our playoff loss to the Hags. Shula needed to dial up schemes to put more pressure on Darnold and he didn't.
