To me what McVay says about a player carries a lot less weight than what he actually does with that player. He can say whatever he wants about a guy for whatever reason. Is he trying to boost that player's confidence? Motivate him? Boost his trade value? Is he just being a nice guy? Does he really believe what he says, only to find out later he was wrong?
I have stopped paying attention to what he or any coach says - so much coach speak and there's no telling what's true and what isn't so why bother trying.
What I do pay attention, though, is what a coach actually does. I am willing to believe that McVay is trying to win whatever game is facing him that week while also positioning the team to compete for the SB. It is a safe bet in my book that if McVay thought Atwell could help the Rams achieve either goal he would be playing.
And sure, maybe McVay has a blind spot here. Or maybe Atwell really can't help the team reach those goals as much as the 48 guys who are active on game day.
