I’ve always been curious about the psychology between the two of them. They’re roughly the same age and McVay seems to go out of his way to please Stafford. Has McVay given him the keys to the offensive play calling? If so, that may be a bit of mistake because Stafford, I feel sometimes like to play the gunslinger hero role, where he’ll be pass happy when the game warrants more of a running game. This game in the rain should have been heavy on the run game yet McStafford chose to pass. That is just crazy.
I posted this reply yesterday about this topic
People seem to have a misconception that play calls like a run or pass are set in stone as they are called in to Stafford by McVay, it isn't really what happens though...
Matthew Stafford primarily runs the specific play called, but he has the ability to change the play at the line of scrimmage (audible) or alter a run play to a pass (or vice versa) based on how he reads the defense...
In the NFL, the standard process is:
Play Call: The offensive coordinator sends in the play call to the quarterback via a headset. The call specifies the formation, the primary intended action (run or pass), and specific options or audibles based on the defensive alignment.
QB Discretion: Stafford is known for his intelligence and ability to read defenses quickly. He is given the authority to check out of a bad play call and audible into a more favorable one, which includes deciding whether to run or pass depending on the look the defense gives him.
Run-Pass Options (RPOs): Many modern offenses, including the Rams' system under coach Sean McVay, utilize RPOs, where the quarterback reads a single defender at the snap and instantly decides whether to hand the ball off or throw a quick pass based on that defender's movement.
So while the initial decision comes from the coaching staff, Stafford has significant control and discretion to adjust the play in real-time to exploit defensive weaknesses.
I think McVay has full trust in Stafford to know what play to get into or out of based on what he sees with his eyes....
