So if you man him up on a WR without a safety over the top you are really rolling the dice. And look I don't blame Shula for drawing the game up the way he did, I think that was a good game to see if Forbes could continue the stretch of play he was showing by challenging him. Rams still would have won, after all, had Stafford played anywhere near his norm this season.
But going forward this secondary is what we thought it is. Which is lacking the top draw corner who can erase opposing threats by himself. So any game where the rush doesn't get home, we are going to see porous coverage. And this is certain against offenses like Carolina, who have a lot of talent in their wideout room. I think McMillan is going to be one of the best young wideouts in this league, he's already most of the way there in fact. Problem for him is his QB has been hit and miss.
My favorite corner in this class as a fit for the Rams is Chris Johnson (SDSU) because it's high time we tuned this secondary to counter Shanahan and his short pass BS. Johnson has good size and is not only willing as a tackler but is excellent in open field tackling, anticipates routes and attacks the ball underneath. I am so tired of watching corners playing off who lack the instincts of when to close. Johnson has those instincts. He's the total package.
