The ball will drift right continually if:
!. The
LACES are on the right side at the hold
2. The
BALL ANGLE is canted right at the hold. A great holder can cant the ball right, and knows by how much, to compensate for wind from the left, and vise-versa. The kick flies straight, or straight enough, crabbing into the wind.
A not-so-great holder does it by accident and some holders can't correct the error. The ball must go down to the spot so fast that the holder can't control the angle. It's a very fine motor skill that must be developed; some have it some don't.
Niel Rackers had a booming leg and was money for Arizona - until they brought in a new punter-holder. Then the fans nicknamed him Wide Right and drove him out of town. Those boos from the stands when he missed weighed on the coaches.
Karty came in with more raw leg and mental skill set than any kicker I have seen in a long time. I hate to see the same sorry-assed scene again for him that I saw with Rackers.
NO kicker is better than his holder - and any kicker will tell you that. And any coach worth beans will tell you that, too.
