It's like in baseball. If the other team throws at one of your hitters, you retaliate by throwing at one of their hitters -- which usually isn't the pitcher. It's a team vs team thing, and that's the way it is. In this case, a player on the 49ers punched the Rams top RB in the head. An appropriate retaliation would be for a player on the Rams to do something similar to the 49ers top RB.
