Way I see it a guy like him who is slight of build is going to need explosive film to put him up high in the draft. It's always the case with QBs who have any question physically, be it size, arm strength, very poor mobility, etc.
And Simpson has that film. He is by far the best QB in college right now. That said I do think DeBoer does a great job with his QBs, and I have thought that for a while given what he did with Penix. So maybe NFL teams are wondering if this is a case of a backup playing way over his head. And by extension that means how he performs the rest of the way is crucial, as he is going to need that film to overcome the underwear olympics and pro day, where guys with the greater physical gifts will stand out.
I think with this class the big risers will be the ones who smoke the workout and pro day, as teams more and more are looking for guys with mobility and big play arms. And of course big arms have always wowed NFL execs so that's not new. Nothing like hearing that ball hiss on the deep outs to get them lathered up for the draft.
But anyway as things stand right now Simpson looks about like Young looked some years back, where his quality on the field puts him in the conversation. I do think Simpson's film is better than Young's was. However this class also will likely have more depth and maybe more quality at the top, depending on who declares. So if Simpson finishes strong he's gonna be in the mix up high based on that film IMO. If not then he'll drop a bit and guys like McVay will position to get him.
